Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship 2027 (Fully Funded in USA & France): A Complete Guide

Climate change doesn’t wait for perfect conditions to do its damage, and the professionals most positioned to fight it can’t afford to wait either. Leaders driving climate action across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America are already doing meaningful work every day. However, access to world-class networks, cutting-edge research, and global policy conversations has historically favoured those already inside the right institutions. The Yale Climate Leaders Fellowship 2027 – Fully Funded USA & France is a new opportunity seeking to bridge these gaps. The people who need those connections most often find the fewest pathways to them.

The Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship 2027 stands as one of the most serious attempts to change that reality. The Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs  one of the most respected policy institutions in the world organizes this fully funded five-month fellowship specifically for mid-career professionals from the Global South who are building their careers around clean energy and climate change. It’s not a scholarship. It’s not a conference. Rather, it’s a sustained, structured engagement with Yale faculty, international energy experts, and a cohort of peers from across the developing world.

Applications are open now. The deadline is 30 July 2026.

What Exactly Is This Fellowship?

Before diving into the logistics, take a moment to understand what this program actually is — because it runs deeper than most opportunities circulating online.

The Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship 2027 is a fully funded 5-month program organized by the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs for mid-career professionals from the Global South. It includes an orientation week at Yale University, six remote learning sessions, and a closing week in Paris, France. The application deadline is 30 July 2026.

The Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship runs as a hybrid program spanning five months. It combines two in-person international weeks  one at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and one in Paris, France  with six structured remote learning sessions in between. Throughout the program, fellows engage directly with Yale faculty, researchers from the International Energy Agency (IEA), representatives from the OECD, and a global advisory board of climate practitioners.

Importantly, the fellowship does not lead to an academic degree. What it delivers instead is something arguably more valuable for someone already mid-career: deep, direct access to the people and institutions shaping global climate policy, plus a peer network of professionals who will go on to lead climate action across multiple continents.

The program brings together 16 young climate and clean energy practitioners from across the Global South to broaden their technical skills, deepen their professional networks, and connect with top global clean energy and climate change leaders.

That’s a deliberately small cohort  just sixteen people. As a result, the experience stays intensive and personal. This isn’t a lecture hall, a webinar, or a conference panel where you’re one of three hundred attendees.

Program Structure: What Happens Over Five Months?

Understanding the structure upfront helps you assess whether the timing fits your professional life before you invest time in the application process.

Phase 1  Yale Orientation Week (In-Person)

Yale Climate Leaders Fellowship 2027 – Fully Funded USA & France

February 1–5, 2027 | New Haven, Connecticut, USA

The fellowship kicks off with a one-week, in-person orientation at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. During this opening week, fellows engage directly with Yale faculty and leading climate practitioners, explore the range of climate research spread across the university, and begin building the framework for the collaborative project they’ll develop over the following months.

This isn’t a campus tour. Instead, it’s structured immersion — interactive sessions, hands-on expert engagement, and the foundation of the cohort dynamic that makes the entire program work.

Phase 2 — Remote Learning Journey (Virtual)

March–June 2027 | Every Wednesday, 9:00 AM Eastern

Between the two in-person weeks, fellows take part in six remote learning journeys and collaborate on a group project from March through June 2027. These virtual sessions keep the cohort connected, deepen the topics introduced at Yale, and build steadily toward the policy recommendations that fellows will present in Paris.

For professionals juggling demanding jobs across different time zones, this remote phase runs intensive but stays compatible with existing commitments.

Phase 3  Paris Closing Week (In-Person)

June 14–18, 2027 | Paris, France

The fellowship wraps up with a closing week in Paris, where fellows present their collaborative policy recommendations to a global advisory board that includes IEA and OECD representatives. Fellows also gain valuable networking access to staff from the International Energy Agency and representatives from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

After the presentations, the program publishes the findings, and fellows receive an invitation to maintain ongoing engagement through the alumni network. In other words, the Paris week isn’t a graduation ceremony  it’s a genuine professional platform with real output attached to it.

What Does the Fellowship Cover?

This fellowship runs fully funded. Here’s exactly what that means in practical terms:

  • Round-trip airfare to Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut
  • Round-trip airfare to Paris, France
  • Accommodation for both in-person weeks
  • Meals throughout all in-person sessions
  • Airport transfers on arrival and departure
  • Daily allowance for program-related expenses

Yale covers all costs for both in-person weeks. Because the remote learning sessions run virtually, fellows don’t face any additional travel costs during the middle phase of the program.

Who Is This Fellowship For?

The eligibility profile here is specific. Rather than assuming you do or don’t qualify, read through each criterion carefully.

Region: Applicants must come from the Global South  specifically from countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America and the Caribbean. This program focuses deliberately on professionals from developing and emerging economies who actively work on climate and clean energy issues within those contexts.

Experience: Applicants should sit between five and ten years into their professional careers, with clear accomplishments at a regional, national, or international level. This isn’t an entry-level program for recent graduates. Instead, it targets professionals who already carry a track record and want to accelerate what they do with it.

Age: Yale sets no minimum or maximum age requirement. Rather than looking for a specific age bracket, the selection committee seeks professionals who are still on the rise in their careers — wherever they happen to be on that path.

Field: The fellowship welcomes professionals across a genuinely wide range of sectors. Eligible applicants include those working in public service and government, clean energy and utilities, entrepreneurship, finance and investment, journalism, education and research, civil society and NGOs, environmental law, and climate policy. The connecting thread across all of these is a clear, demonstrated link to climate change and clean energy — not a specific job title.

Language: All sessions  both in-person and remote  run in English, so fluency is required.

Availability: Fellows must attend both in-person weeks (Yale in February 2027 and Paris in June 2027) and join all six remote Wednesday sessions between March and June.

Why This Fellowship Stands Apart

Plenty of climate conferences, short courses, and international workshops compete for professionals’ attention right now. So what makes this program worth the effort of a serious, competitive application?

First, the institutional weight matters. The Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs carries a name that opens doors. The faculty connections, research networks, and advisory relationships that come with it hold real professional credibility  in a way that generic “international leadership programs” simply don’t replicate.

Second, the partner institutions add serious depth. The engagement with the IEA and OECD during the Paris closing week goes well beyond a formality. These organizations publish the global data, shape the policy frameworks, and directly advise the governments driving the energy transition. Sitting in those conversations in person, as part of a small cohort of recognized emerging leaders, gives fellows access that most Global South professionals never reach.

Third, the small cohort size creates lasting professional bonds. Sixteen fellows. That’s it. Peer relationships built across five months in a group that small tend to last  and to matter professionally in ways that a room of two hundred people rarely produces.

Fourth, the published output gives fellows something tangible. The policy recommendations presented during the Paris closing week go into publication. Fellows leave not just with a certificate, but with documented, publicly available policy work produced in partnership with one of the world’s great universities. That’s a meaningful distinction on any professional profile.

How to Apply.

Yale Climate Leaders Fellowship 2027 – Fully Funded USA & France

Yale manages the entire application process through the official Jackson School website. Here’s how the process works from start to finish:

Step 1: Review the official program page first. Before starting your application, read the full program details at jackson.yale.edu/international-leadership-center/climate/. This remains the only authoritative source for requirements, and the university updates details there before anywhere else.

Step 2: Confirm your eligibility honestly. Check your regional background, years of experience, professional field, and your actual availability for both in-person weeks and all remote sessions. The selection process is competitive enough that a weak eligibility fit rarely leads to selection — so save your energy for programs where you genuinely qualify.

Step 3: Prepare your materials carefully. The application covers your educational background, professional history, climate-related achievements, leadership experience, and your goals for the fellowship and beyond. Think through your answers thoroughly before starting the form, because rushed applications tend to show clearly at the review stage.

Step 4: Demonstrate your climate commitment with specifics. Generic statements about caring for the environment won’t move a selection committee at this level. What actually works is a clear, evidence-backed account of what you’ve achieved in your career to advance climate action, paired with a specific articulation of what you plan to do with what the fellowship gives you.

Step 5: Submit well before the deadline. Applications close on Thursday, 30 July 2026 at 11:00 AM Eastern time. This isn’t a soft cutoff. Late or incomplete submissions don’t receive consideration, so plan your timeline to submit at least a few days early.

Note: Yale requires an electronic application fee at submission. Confirm the current amount on the official application page before you begin.

Final Thoughts

The climate crisis doesn’t lack attention. What it does lack is the right people  experienced, embedded, credible professionals working in the most affected regions  gaining access to the platforms, networks, and institutional relationships that let their work truly scale.

The Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship 2027 directly addresses that gap. Five months. Two continents. Sixteen professionals who will finish the program with sharper skills, deeper networks, and a published policy contribution they can point to for the rest of their careers.

If you’re a mid-career professional from the Global South with a real track record in climate or clean energy, this opportunity is worth clearing your schedule for.

The deadline is 30 July 2026. Start your application early at the official Yale Jackson School website  and give it the attention a program this competitive deserves.
