Growing Concern as 23 Nigerians Remain on Death Row in Saudi Arabia
At least 23 Nigerians are on death row in Saudi Arabia over drug-related crimes. The newspaper, citing a document, reported that they were convicted under the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Control Law, which carries a death sentence.
The suspects were said to have been arrested between 2016 and 2017 at airports in Jeddah and Madinah after allegedly concealing banned substances internally.

This follows the recent execution of Kudirat Afolabi by Saudi authorities for drug trafficking, as well as the case of Saheed Sobade, another Nigerian reportedly apprehended in Jeddah with 1,183 grams of cocaine. Addressing the issue, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Nigeria, Adnan Mahmod Bostaji, said the kingdom only imposes such sentences when supported by clear evidence.

He stated that the legal system is fair and transparent, while noting that around 1.5 million Nigerians live in the country and are engaged in legitimate work. He added that they are treated without discrimination or harassment.
